10 October 2024, Amman, Jordan – Under the patronage the Mayor of Amman Dr Yousef Al-Shawarbeh, the Greater Amman Municipality, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) Country Office in Jordan, inaugurated a smoking cessation clinic and a dedicated walking track and outdoor gym specially designed to encourage physical activity among women in King Abdullah II Park. Located in the Al-Muqablin area of the city, the park attracts more than 2 million visitors a year.

The initiative aims to promote healthier lifestyles and combat smoking-related health risks among the estimated 66% of Jordanian men and 17% of women smoke.

The clinic offers a wide range of support services, including consultations with smoking cessation specialists, tests to measure carbon monoxide levels, blood pressure and blood sugar, nutritional consultations and psychological support, and is in line with Jordan’s National Tobacco Control Strategy 2024–2023 and Action Plan 2024–2026 which recommend multifaceted support to increase smoking cessation success.

Physical activity can significantly reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, while inactivity is a risk factor in many noncommunicable diseases.

“The opening of the clinic and outdoor gym reflects our commitment to fostering a supportive environment that enhances public health. These facilities present vital opportunities for the community to overcome smoking habits and embrace physical activity. We aspire to build a city where health is prioritized for everyone,” Dr Al-Shawarbeh said during the inauguration

UN Resident Coordinator in Jordan Sheri Ritsema-Anderson added: “Health is at the heart of sustainable development and initiatives like this smoking cessation clinic and sports area reflect our collective commitment to improving the well-being of individuals. The United Nations, through WHO and other agencies, is proud to collaborate with national partners to support healthy lifestyles, reduce preventable diseases and promote physical activity."

“The opening of the clinic is a testament to our commitment to a comprehensive approach to tobacco control based on the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control,” said WHO Representative to Jordan Dr Jamila Al-Raiby.

“Promoting physical activity through facilities like the gym and walking track aligns with WHO recommendations to prevent noncommunicable diseases. The initiative aims to enhance individual health and contribute to a healthier, more sustainable society.”

That the event was attended by representatives from civil society organizations focused on tobacco control and public health promotion underlines the importance of collaborative efforts to create a healthier and more supportive environment.

In promoting smoking cessation and active living, we lay the foundations for a healthier future in which every individual in our community can thrive in a smoke-free world.
